occupational pension with/without a cba

Since financial literacy is something dear to my heart, pensions and the Swedish pension system have always been something I find it very important to understand. It’s also one of the most important aspects of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) or 🇸🇪 kollektivavtal, because they regulate how much occupational pension your employer deposits on your behalf.

As regulated by CBAs the occupational pension deposits look like this:
– 4.5% to 6% of your salary up to 46 438 kr (2023)
– 30% to 31.5% on any excess amount, above 46 438 kr

For someone earning 50 000 kr/month that’s a minimum 3 159 kr/month in pension deposits (37 896 kr yearly).
4.5% x 46 438 = 2 090 kr
30% x (50 000 – 46 438) = 1069 kr
Total: 3 159 kr

Now, let’s do a comparison between a private pension solution (Avanza 75 default fund) and the CBA one (ITP1). And let’s pretend the same % of money is deposited by Company X (despite not having a CBA) out of the goodness of their hearts.

Some assumptions about our Jane Doe and the financial markets:
– starting salary = 50 000 kr
– 2.5% YoY salary increase
– stays at Company X for 5 years
– accrues compound interest for another 25 years before retiring
– 6.0% YoY value increase on the invested funds
– private pension fund capital fee = 0.66% (Avanza 75 default fund), which is actually ok and one of the “better” private solutions you could get, there are far worse ones with fees above 1%

At the end of year 5 the employer will have paid approx 286 481 kr in pension deposits into Avanza, incl 6% YoY value increase and minus 0.66% in annual fees. And after 25 years Jane’s pension fund will be worth 1 041 949 kr, at which point Jane will have paid 187 590 kr in fees (!).

Had this been the CBA solution (ITP1) Jane’s fund would be worth 291 254 kr at year 5, incl 6% YoY value increase and minus 0.09% yearly fund fees (capped at 600 kr) and 0.8521% yearly deposit fees (capped at 450 kr). And after 25 years it would be worth 1 209 929 kr (167 980 kr more than the Avanza option), at which point Jane will have paid approx 20 100 kr in fees, since they cap out at 450 kr and 600 kr yearly respectively. That’s 11% of the Avanza fees.

Now imagine if Jane Doe were to spend 30 of her working years in different companies without CBAs. Actually, don’t imagine it, let me do the math instead: 30 years would result in Jane Doe losing approx 650 000 kr in fees to the Avanza solution.

With an even worse solution (like SEB) with yearly fees of 1,06%, we’re talking 1 100 000 kr lost to fees!

spotify and the anti-union propaganda

So, it’s been brought to my attention that Spotify are handing out “information” flyers in front of one (or more?) of their Stockholm offices. As expected it’s more desinformation and anti-union propaganda than anything else. So let’s clear some things up. I’ll list some points from their flyer below and we’ll sort out how a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) actually would or wouldn’t influence life/work at Spotify. Here we go!

– “Spotify offers better terms and conditions than a CBA”.
Great! Nothing in a CBA prohibits an employer from offering better/more benefits than what’s included in the CBA.

– “If we had a CBA we’d have to join an employer network/org that negotiates on behalf of many employers. We’d be expected to fall in line and not stand out.”
Yep, the larger CBA for Spotify would probably be Teknikavtalet, which is a “base CBA” tailored to tech companies just like Spotify. Local arrangements/additions could still be negotiated though with the local reps. Nothing stopping that and also very unclear what it means to “fall in line”? Vaguest point yet 🤦🏻‍♀️

– “Without a CBA downsizing/letting people go is actually harder for Spotify as we have to follow more strict legislation”
Wrong. Their MO here really is “the Devil reading the Bible” 🤦🏻‍♀️ Companies with a CBA still have to adhere to the compulsory (tvingande) parts of the Employment Protection Act (LAS). Some areas in LAS however _can_ be (don’t have to be, again that’s a negotiation!) overriden by the CBA. For example, in a scenario where the employer wants to downsize and there’s a CBA, the employer and union could sit down together to agree on the new shape of the org and how to staff it. Which would result in LIFO list, aka avtalsturlista (main factor still being tenure at the company). And with a CBA the employer is also allowed to exempt 3 people from the LIFO list. How is this worse in any way? Sounds way better, smoother and likely to succeed imho because the employer would leverage the union’s deep/hands on knowledge of the org and how to staff it for success? 🎉

– “A CBA is worse because it delegates access to information and influence to the local union club, away from the individual.”
To this I really just want to say, “divided we beg, united we bargain”. Of course they want to make you believe that your individual voice/concerns/opinions would weigh as much as an organised united offensive lead by your union reps. But we all know that’s a lie. It’s in their interest for you to stay divided, that way you’ll never be strong enough individually to actually push for change. Don’t buy the lie.

Now, they also list a bunch of current employee benefits in a table with one column saying “Spotify” and one saying “CBA”. For most of the benefits the just write “N/A” in the CBA column. And this has got to be the worst attempt at a “burn”/mic drop I’ve ever seen?! There’s absolutely NOTHING stopping Spotify from continuing to offer these benefits even with a CBA in place. Nothing. Niente. Nada.

Lemme just list some of the most important ones because they’re getting them wrong too (of course).

1. Pension
They’re trying to make you believe that their private pension offer is better than the CBA one, which has fund fees around 0.09% that caps out at 600kr per year (Alecta) and a deposit fee of 0.8125%, which caps out at 450kr per year+employment. By comparison a private pension offer with SEB clocks in at 0.18% in admin fees (yearly) and on top of that you’re paying between 0.88% for the default fund. That’s 0.09% vs 1.06% in yearly fund fees. With a pension fund of a couple of 100 thousands that’s thousand of kronor in fees _every year_. And we all know compound interest right? Ie in this case the importance of low fees. You do the math.

2. Salary budgets
Again, the so called mark/”märket” is not a ceiling. The big industry employers and unions recently agreed on 4.1% (2023) and 3.3% (2024) salary increases for the export/import sensitive parts of the Swedish labour market (to safeguard our national competitiveness). There’s absolutely nothing stopping Spotify from offering bigger salary increases than this. That’s just blatant lies.
